WHO WE ARE

The Greek Association of Behavioral Research was founded in 1974, under the nitiative of the psychiatrist G. Boulougouris. Its objectives are:

a) The promotion of behavior research, in compliance with the learning theories as well as

b) The application and development of behavior therapies.

By means of organizing Seminars, Lectures, Participations in Greek and European conventions as well as inviting internationally recognized specialists within the field of behavior therapy, the Greek Association of Behavioral Research contributed to the dissemination of this psychotherapeutic approach in Greece.

In September 1994, the Greek Association of Behavioral Research organized in Corfu, under the presidency of D. A. Christidis, the 24th European Convention of Cognitive and Behavioral therapies. 700 participants from 32 countries, among whom P. Lang, N. Schneiderman, I. Marks, M. Mahoney, P. Salkovskis, N. Birbaumer, I. Hand and others
contributed to the success of the event with great enthusiasm.

In 1992, members of the Greek Association of Behavioral Research founded the Institute of Behavior Therapy and Research, since the foundation of an organized-research and education Institute was proved imperative within the Greek framework. Among the activities of the Institute of Behavior Research and Therapy is the potential of training in behavior psychotherapies, in compliance with the E.A.B.C.T. (European
Association for Behaviour and Cognitive Therapy) requirements.

In 2001, the Greek Association of Behavioral Research founded a branch in Thessaloniki, responding to the increasing demand. The aim of the branch is the promotion, development and application of Behavior Therapies in Northern Greece.

Among the activities of the Greek Association of Behavioral Research has been the organization of seminars concerned with the following subjects:

  • Mental images in psychotherapy
  • Women Counseling
  • Work burnout
  • Dealing with mourning and bereavement
  • Counseling for parents of children with special needs
  • Behavioral interventions for children with autism
  • The role of emotions in disease outbreak and treatment
  • Family and chronic illness
  • Behavioral treatment of patients with resistant agoraphobia
  • Eating Disorders
  • Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Psychoeducation

AIMS

The aims of the Greek Association of Behavioral Research are of public benefit and non-profit.

These aims, which are scientific, sociable, humanistic and educational are concerned with the following:

Promotion of research, study and therapy within the field of health services, especially the behavior treatment and pathology, applying cognitive behavior methods. The term “behavior” applies to the aggregate of intrinsic, extrinsic, conscious and unconscious responses.

Elaboration, publicization, recommendation and development of appropriate measures for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of problems, related to behavior disruptions.

Support, training, instruction and guidance of medical staff, psychologists, health and social services professionals, educators as well as of anyone concerned with the development of activities, in accordance with the Association’s aims.

GOALS

The Means

For the accomplishment of its goals, the Greek Association of Behavioral Research develops appropriate activities and more specifically:

It organizes structures within the health field and more specifically within the domain of behavior and psychopathology, concerned with the study of the scientific, social, humanistic or educational activity, as defined by the Association’s aims. These structures can develop health education activities, such as prevention, diagnosis, treatment, therapy and rehabilitation.

It conducts or undertakes, on behalf of the Association or other state or private, national, international or foreign organizations or associations with respective or similar aims, the realization of programs, which concern the field of health psychopathology and more specifically the behavior pathology and treatment, as defined by the Association’s aims.

It organizes conventions, symposiums, educational programs and seminars for specialists or non-specialists. It develops publishing activity, it organizes libraries, data banks, archives, publications and scientific co-operations for the promotion of its aims.It founds branches, with the same aims, within Greece and abroad.

It closely co-operates with the Institute of Behavior Research and Therapy. It co-operates with non-academic and other foundations, as well as independent research organizations and teams, having respective aims or activities, in Greece and/or abroad.

The Association’s members can constitute branches, provided that they hold specialized qualifications.

In general, the Association undertakes and promotes any activity and initiative that aims at the successful accomplishment of its objectives.

Conditions of acceptance

  • The candidate must be a scientist who works in the mental health
    field and has completed training in behavioral therapy or
    cognitive-behavioral therapy.
  • The candidate must a researcher in the field of human behavior
    and / or theories of learning
  • The candidate must be a non mental health scientist working on
    areas where theories of learning are applied (eg, education) and
    have proven experience on behavioral therapy and / or theories of
    learning.
